If you’re dreaming of launching an online program and instantly pulling in $10,000 months, let me hit you with a truth bomb: that’s cute, but you might want to pump the brakes.
Yes, it’s possible. No, it’s not the norm. If you’re starting from scratch, it’s going to take longer—and that’s not because you’re broken or doing it wrong. It’s because there’s a real, non-sexy timeline to building an online business that consistently makes money.
In this post, I’m pulling back the curtain on what that timeline really looks like so you can set smart expectations and play the long game.
Let’s get into it.
What Counts as a Successful Online Program?
Before we break down timelines, let’s define “success.”
For most coaches, success means hitting consistent six-figure revenue. That’s roughly $8,000 to $10,000 per month, depending on your expenses and margins. Keep in mind, six figures isn’t what you take home—you’re likely bringing home something closer to $80,000.
And sure, you can live on less depending on where you are. But in North America, $80,000 is often the threshold where your business feels sustainable—not just a side hustle or passion project.
Why Does It Take So Long to Build Consistent Revenue?
Even if you’re an excellent coach with a killer program, you need to build three key things before the money rolls in consistently:
1. Credibility
People need to believe you know your stuff.
Even if you have a busy in-person practice or tons of offline experience, when you step into the online world, you’re basically a nobody. Harsh? Maybe. But true.
Five Instagram posts and a website won’t instantly make people trust you. Online credibility takes time—period.
2. Authority
You need to become the go-to expert in your niche.
Whether you’re in the acne space, the perimenopause space, the weight loss space—whatever—you can’t fake authority. You build it by showing up consistently, refining your message, and delivering value over time.
If you’re still figuring out your niche and your Instagram feed looks like a random collage, it’s going to take time to position yourself as an authority.
3. Audience
People need to know you exist.
You need followers, an email list, and people engaging with your content. Audience growth can happen quickly, especially with paid ads, but even then, you have to build trust with that audience—and that part takes longer.
Reality Check: The Exception, Not the Rule
I’ve seen one client hit her first $10,000 month within six months. But she wasn’t starting from zero—she already had one-on-one clients and industry experience. She was exceptional.
For the average coach starting cold, expect it to take longer. And that’s okay.
Year One: The Humbling Year
Your first year is where you get punched in the face by reality (and maybe your own tech frustrations).
Here’s what you’re doing:
- Figuring out your niche, message, and offer
- Learning the marketing and sales side of business
- Wrestling with tech (yes, you’ll want to scream)
- Facing rejection over and over
Expect inconsistent sales. Expect to work more than you earn. Expect to doubt yourself. Expect imposter syndrome.
And let me be clear: you’ll need to hustle.
I know the internet is full of people selling the “aligned flow” fantasy, but hear me now—you have to earn your right not to hustle. Nobody skips the hard work phase.
Year Two to Three: The Building Years
This is when things start to click.
You’ve got some client wins under your belt. You’ve refined your systems. You’re building a reputation. Referrals start trickling in. People tell you, “Hey, I heard about you from my friend who did your program.”
Here’s what you can expect:
- More reliable income (but not guaranteed)
- Bigger audience growth through reputation
- Growing confidence in your ability to sell
- Space to test new strategies without full panic
For me, it wasn’t until year four that I fully let go of all other income streams and trusted my business could stand on its own. Until then, I worked for other companies while building my business on the side.
Year Three Plus: The CEO Years
Welcome to the good stuff.
By year three, assuming you’ve been focused and consistent, you start to trust your business. You know how to generate leads. You know how to close sales. You know how to handle a slow month without spiraling into an existential crisis.
This is when you might:
- Hire your first regular (part-time) team members
- Run bigger, more profitable launches
- Build systems that create real freedom
- Enjoy the income and lifestyle you’ve worked so hard for
But none of this happens without the foundation you laid in years one through three.
What Speeds Up the Timeline?
Not everyone’s timeline is the same. Here’s what can make the process faster:
- Existing audience or authority: If you’ve been active online or have a one-on-one practice, you’re not starting from scratch.
- Hiring a coach or joining a program: You still have to do the work, but you’ll have a roadmap and support.
- Sticking to one program: Constantly changing your offer or niche resets your progress.
- Avoiding shiny object syndrome: Stay focused. One niche, one offer, one message.
But even with these advantages, you still have to do the work.
The Unsexy Secret: Time
Want to know why my Health Coach Accelerator program is thriving? It’s not because of a magic funnel or some secret tactic.
It’s because I’ve been running the same program for five years. Every year, the messaging gets tighter. The systems get smoother. The referrals grow.
You can’t shortcut trust and relationship building. You can’t yell at the plant to make it grow faster. You can only cultivate it with time, care, and consistency.
Final Reality Checks
- Expect year one to be hard. With or without a coach, the first year is brutal.
- Look for consistency on a yearly basis. Monthly fluctuations are normal.
- Play the long game. Real freedom and revenue come later.
- You’re not broken. You’re just on the timeline.
Building an online business isn’t easy, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling a fantasy. But if you stick with it, stay focused, and do the work, you can build a business that gives you freedom, income, and fulfillment.
It just takes time.
